Shame makes us want to disappear. After we fail, especially in a way that hurts people we love, our first instinct is not to run to God but to cover up. We manage our image, change the subject, stay busy, and quietly avoid prayer. We assume God is coming to accuse us, so we hide.
That instinct is as old as the first sin. Adam and Eve had everything: a good world, each other, and open fellowship with their Creator. Then they believed the lie that God was holding out on them. The moment they disobeyed, they saw themselves differently. They felt exposed, and they tried to fix it with coverings of their own making. When God came near, they hid.
What God did next is the heart of the gospel. He came looking for them. He called out a question, not because He lacked information, but to draw them out into the open. He spoke honestly about the consequences of their sin, and He also gave a promise that a descendant of the woman would one day crush the serpent. Then He clothed them Himself.
Our coverings never work. Excuses, performance, and religion cannot remove guilt. But God has provided a covering that does. Jesus came as the promised offspring and gave His life so that sinners could stand before God clothed in His righteousness. If you are hiding today, stop. The God you are avoiding is the one calling your name.
