Promises for Hard Seasons

These are promise cards for hard seasons. They are not a quiz, and they do not score you. Each card holds one of God's promises when life is heavy: fear, waiting, weakness, grief, loneliness, anxiety, suffering, weariness, doubt, distance, shame. You swipe or flip, hold the promise, and let Scripture do the heavy lifting.

This page is about what God has said. It is not a breath technique (see Breath Prayers), not a lament walk-through (see How Long, O LORD?), and not an identity flip (see Who God Says I Am). His promises rest on His character and on Christ's finished work, not on how steady you feel today.

How to: Pick the season that fits, or walk several. Read the FRONT promise and Living it slowly. Flip for more from God's Word and songs. Come back as often as you need. You do not have to feel brave for a promise to be true. God keeps His Word.

Each card shows a hard season, one key promise, and Living it on the front. Tap a card, or press Enter or Space on Turn the card, for more from God's Word and songs. Tap empty space on the back to flip back.

Card 1 of 12

When you are afraid

fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Isaiah 41:10 (ESV)

Living it

Fear names a real weight, and God does not scold you for feeling it. His answer is not "try harder to be brave." His answer is Himself: I am with you, I am your God, I will uphold you. Courage grows when you lean on the One who already holds you.

Card 1: When you are afraid

More from God's Word

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.

Psalm 56:3 (ESV)

It is the LORD who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.

Deuteronomy 31:8 (ESV)

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.

Joshua 1:9 (ESV)

Songs

Card 2 of 12

When you are waiting

Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!

Psalm 27:14 (ESV)

Living it

Waiting is not wasted time with God. He is not late, and He is not absent while you watch the clock. Waiting for the LORD means anchoring your hope in who He is, not in how fast the door opens. Strength often returns in the wait, not after it.

Card 2: When you are waiting

More from God's Word

but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

Isaiah 40:31 (ESV)

The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD.

Lamentations 3:25-26 (ESV)

I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning.

Psalm 130:5-6 (ESV)

Songs

Card 3 of 12

When you are weak

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

2 Corinthians 12:9 (ESV)

Living it

Weakness is not the end of the story for people who belong to Jesus. Grace is enough, and His power shows up in the place you would rather hide. You do not have to feel strong to be held by strong grace. Bring the weakness to Him.

Card 3: When you are weak

More from God's Word

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 (ESV)

He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength.

Isaiah 40:29 (ESV)

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

Psalm 73:26 (ESV)

Songs

Card 4 of 12

When you grieve

The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

Psalm 34:18 (ESV)

Living it

Grief is not a lack of faith. The God who stays near to the brokenhearted does not rush you past the ache. This card is grief-adjacent: a promise to hold when sorrow is heavy. For the full walk-with companion, go to When You Grieve. See also Grieving on How Are You Feeling?.

Card 4: When you grieve

More from God's Word

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Matthew 5:4 (ESV)

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

Psalm 147:3 (ESV)

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.

Revelation 21:4 (ESV)

Revelation 21:4 is future hope. It does not erase today's tears. It tells you where the story is going because Jesus rose.

Songs

Card 5 of 12

When you are lonely

“I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Hebrews 13:5 (ESV)

Living it

Loneliness is real, and God does not shame you for naming it. His promise is presence: He will never leave you nor forsake you. He often keeps that promise through His people too, so let a trusted brother or sister in when you can.

Card 5: When you are lonely

More from God's Word

Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Hebrews 13:5 (ESV)

It is the LORD who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.

Deuteronomy 31:8 (ESV)

Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you.

Isaiah 43:1-2 (ESV) (excerpt)

Songs

Card 6 of 12

When you are anxious

casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

1 Peter 5:7 (ESV)

Living it

Anxiety often tries to carry tomorrow before today is done. God's Word does not pretend the worry is silly. It invites you to cast the whole pile on Him, because He cares for you. Peace is His gift in Christ Jesus, not a mood you manufacture.

Card 6: When you are anxious

More from God's Word

do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6-7 (ESV)

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.

Isaiah 26:3 (ESV)

Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Matthew 6:34 (ESV)

Songs

Card 7 of 12

When you are suffering

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

Romans 8:18 (ESV)

Living it

Suffering is not proof that God has walked away. Scripture tells the truth about pain, and about glory ahead. Romans 8:28 is not a flippant sticker over hard days. It is a promise for those who love God: He is at work for good according to His purpose, even when you cannot see the thread yet.

Card 7: When you are suffering

More from God's Word

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

Romans 8:28 (ESV)

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

James 1:2-4 (ESV)

So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 (ESV)

Songs

Card 8 of 12

When you are weary

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Matthew 11:28 (ESV)

Living it

Weariness is not a personal failure. Jesus invites the heavy laden to Himself, not to one more strategy. Come as you are. The rest He gives is His gift. His yoke is easy because He carries what you cannot, and He is gentle and lowly in heart toward you.

Card 8: When you are weary

More from God's Word

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Matthew 11:28-30 (ESV)

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.

Psalm 23:1-3 (ESV) (excerpt)

but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

Isaiah 40:31 (ESV)

Songs

Card 9 of 12

When you doubt

“I believe; help my unbelief!”

Mark 9:24 (ESV)

Living it

Doubt is not the opposite of faith when you bring it to Jesus. The father in Mark 9 told the truth: I believe, and I need help with what still will not believe. Thomas was met by the risen Lord, not cast out. What keeps you is not the size of your certainty. What keeps you is the God who is able to keep you from stumbling.

Card 9: When you doubt

More from God's Word

Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.

Jude 24-25 (ESV)

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:38-39 (ESV)

Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

John 20:29 (ESV)

Songs

Card 10 of 12

When God feels far

The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.

Psalm 145:18 (ESV)

Living it

Feeling far from God is a heavy season, and the Psalms know it well. Nearness is His promise to those who call on Him in truth, not a prize for people who feel spiritual. You may not sense Him yet. Call anyway. If the ache turns into lament, walk How Long, O LORD? next.

Card 10: When God feels far

More from God's Word

The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

Psalm 34:18 (ESV)

“I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.”

Isaiah 57:15 (ESV) (excerpt)

Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.

Psalm 139:7-10 (ESV)

Songs

Card 11 of 12

When you feel not enough

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Romans 8:1 (ESV)

Living it

This card is about the promise of grace, not a full identity-lie walk-through. If a lie about who you are is loud, go to Who God Says I Am. Here, hold what God has done: no condemnation in Christ Jesus, saved by grace through faith, not by your enough-ness. His gift, not your résumé, is what stands.

Card 11: When you feel not enough

More from God's Word

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Ephesians 2:8-9 (ESV)

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

2 Corinthians 12:9 (ESV)

Songs

Card 12 of 12

When you are tempted

God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

1 Corinthians 10:13 (ESV) (excerpt)

Living it

Temptation is common, and God is faithful in it. The promise is not that you will never feel pulled. The promise is that He provides a way of escape so you may endure. Jesus, your high priest, was tempted as we are, yet without sin. Draw near to the throne of grace. Mercy and help are there in time of need.

Card 12: When you are tempted

More from God's Word

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

1 Corinthians 10:13 (ESV)

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Hebrews 4:15-16 (ESV)

Songs

Where to go next

A closing word

Every promise on these cards finds its Yes in Jesus. God is not guessing whether He will keep His Word. In Christ, He already has said Yes.

For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.

2 Corinthians 1:20 (ESV)

Jesus died for sinners and rose again. Because He lives, the promises stand when your feelings do not. You can hold them without pretending the hard season is easy. Come to Him. Stay with Him. Amen.

Songs

If you don't know Him yet: you can start right here. Turn to Jesus, who died for sinners and rose again, trust Him, and bring Him your whole heart. The Good News page says it more fully.
