Most of us hear a lot of truth. Sermons, podcasts, verses on our phones. We nod, feel moved for a moment, and move on. A week later nothing has changed. It is tempting to conclude that some people are just more spiritual by temperament, the naturally receptive types, and that we are not one of them. Or we try to manufacture good soil with a better routine and feel proud when it seems to work.
Jesus told the parable of the sower to warn people, not to compliment them. The seed is the word of God, and the life in it is God’s. What makes soil good is not personality but hearing the word, holding it fast, and bearing fruit with patience. Paul adds that the one who plants and the one who waters are nothing compared to God, who gives the growth. So good soil is not something you become by effort alone. It is a heart God breaks open and softens, often through the very trials that expose what was choking His word. Fruit grows slowly and comes from Christ, the true Vine. The right response is not to admire your soil or despair of it. Ask God to plow you, then take one thing He said and actually do it.

Lyrics
[Verse 1]
You came with a handful
Of seed in your palm
You scattered it wide
Like a prayer in the dawn
Some fell on the roadside
Hard as stone
Some got choked out
By the world's undertow
[Pre-Chorus]
But I hear the lesson
Soft in the rain
What we hold matters
What we make remains
[Chorus]
Give me good soil
Let me grow, let me grow
Good soil
Where the mercy can show
I'll be good soil
For the seed You sow
And I'll scatter it farther
Wherever I go
[Verse 2]
The thorns in my hurry
The rocks in my fear
The dust in my anger
The weeds of old years
You broke up my hurry
You pulled up the lies
Turned over the hard parts
And opened my eyes
[Pre-Chorus]
Now my hands are ready
My heart is awake
I want what is holy
For other's sake
[Chorus]
Give me good soil
Let me grow, let me grow
Good soil
Where the mercy can show
I'll be good soil
For the seed You sow
And I'll scatter it farther
Wherever I go
[Bridge]
Make me a field
For Your glory to shine
To harvest a bounty
That's Yours and not mine
Let the fruit that I bear
Become seed for the blind
To feed every soul
That You bring me to find
[Final Chorus]
Give me good soil
Let me grow, let me grow
Good soil
Where the mercy can show
I'll be good soil
For the seed You sow
And I'll scatter it farther
Wherever I go
[Outro]
Good soil
Let it run deep and slow
Good soil
Till the whole world knows
I'll be good soil
For the seed You sow
And I'll scatter it farther
Wherever I go
