Prone to Forget

Track 2 • 3:32
Art for Prone to Forget

The Story

Gratitude is easiest to lose when life is going well. A raise, a good season, a healthy family, and slowly the story in our heads changes. We worked hard. We planned well. We earned this. Nobody says it out loud, but prayer gets thin and thanks becomes a formality before meals. Then a hard season arrives, and suddenly we remember God, mostly to ask for what we just had. Both moves come from the same heart, one that treats God as a backup supplier rather than the Giver of everything.

Before Israel entered the land, Moses warned them about this exact danger. The threat was not the wilderness. It was the full table on the other side, when they would credit their own strength. Remembering, in Scripture, is not a gratitude exercise. It is giving God back His rightful place as the source of every good thing, and the One who keeps His covenant. The greatest benefit to remember is not crops or comfort but a Savior who gave Himself for forgetful people. Jesus gave His followers a meal so they would not forget His body and blood. When you notice you have drifted into self-credit, do not just try harder to feel thankful. Go back to the cross, and let thanks rise from what He has done.

Lyrics

[Verse 1] When the sun is high and the fields are green It's the easiest thing to look at the scene And quietly whisper, "Look what I've made" As I sit content in the comfortable shade But when the cupboard is full and the table is spread I forget the hand that provided the bread I swallow the lie of my own self-reliance And trade my devotion for silent defiance [Chorus] Lord, I forget to give You thanks When I am full, or my spirit sinks So I lift my hands through the joy and pain To thank You, Lord, till I remember again [Verse 2] But then comes the frost, and the winter sets in The shadows grow long where the shelter had been When the cupboards are bare, I am quick to implore Begging for things that I had just before But my thanksgiving shouldn't depend on the store It's a vigorous act when the soul is at war It's bowing my heart to the Sovereign King Accepting Your right over everything [Bridge] So wake up my soul, remember the cross Remember the gain that was bought through the loss When I'm desperate for help, let my gratitude rise With the very same strength as my sorrowful cries Don't let me drift into thinking I'm strong And don't let my grief drown the truth of my song [Chorus] Lord, I forget to give You thanks When I am full, or my spirit sinks So I lift my hands through the joy and pain To thank You, Lord, till I remember again [Outro] Mmm-mmm, I will thank You, Lord When the cupboard is bare When the cupboard is full You are beautiful Thank You, Lord
