In my sixty-two years, I have been through my parents' nasty divorce, two house fires, multiple wrecks, poverty, being "disowned", open-heart surgery, depression, and panic attacks — God was near in all of these crises. Daily life is harder: getting up, bills, compounding bad choices. There have been times when I drifted away from God and I wrestled over whether my salvation was real. Isaiah 40 says those who wait for the Lord renew their strength. Do not tire of doing good. The good news is not "dig deeper in yourself." It is that though the outer self wastes away, God renews the inner self day by day as we look to what is unseen and eternal.
