All These Years

Track 1 • 3:37
Art for All These Years

The Story

Some of the hardest anger to see is the anger of the faithful. We showed up, served, and kept the rules while others wandered off. Then grace is poured out on someone who never earned it, and something in us goes cold. We would never say it out loud, but we feel passed over, as if God owes us for all these years.

That is where the older brother stands in Jesus’ parable. He is not in a far country. He is right outside the house, close enough to hear the music, and his resentment keeps him in the yard. His obedience had turned into a ledger, and the ledger made him feel like a servant in his own father’s home.

Then the father does something surprising. He comes out for this son too, just as he ran out for the younger one. He does not scold him. He pleads with him and reminds him that he has always been with him and that everything he has is his.

Both sons needed rescue, one from running away and one from trying to earn what was already given. Jesus, the true Son, went out into the dark and paid for both. The feast is not a wage. If you are standing outside keeping count, the door is open. Come in and be glad.

Associated Scripture

Luke 15:25-32 (ESV): "Now his older son was in the field, and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. And he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him back safe and sound.’ But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him, but he answered his father, ‘Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command, yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him!’ And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. It was fitting to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.’"

Ephesians 2:8-9 (ESV): "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast."

Lyrics

[Verse 1] Sun going down on the far east field Dirt in the creases of my hands Twelve rows planted, the fence repaired I come home like a dutiful man Then I hear it from the end of the lane A fiddle and the stamp of feet I catch a servant by the sleeve And he tells me who came home to eat [Pre-Chorus] He gets the robe, he gets the ring The fattened calf and everything [Chorus] All these years I’ve served you Never stepped outside the line All these years and not one goat To laugh with friends of mine Now the party’s all for him All these years [Verse 2] I stay out by the water trough Yellow light spilling from the door Every dawn I was at your side Did you see me there before? Then the latch and my father’s boots He is pleading with me in the yard This son of yours treats you bad and Gets the feast but I get the chores [Pre-Chorus] I stayed so close you looked right through The son who never ran from you [Chorus] All these years I’ve served you Never stepped outside the line All these years and not one goat To laugh with friends of mine Now the party’s all for him All these years [Bridge] Son, you are always with me And all that is mine is yours You were never a servant here I came out the door for you And I came out the door for him Your brother was dead and is alive It’s your anger keeping you outside Come in, and be glad with me [Verse 3] Two sons and both of us far from home One with the pigs and one with the plow One tried to run from our father’s love One tried to earn it, I see it now Another Son went out in the dark And paid what neither of us could The feast is not a wage I earn It’s a welcome bought with blood [Final Chorus] All these years I’ve served you Like a stranger, not a son All these years you were with me And the feast has just begun Will I keep the count or will I come in All these years [Outro] The fiddle’s playing, the door is wide My father’s waiting here outside Will I go in? Will you go in?
