We like the idea of God having a plan for our lives, as long as the plan matches ours. When His will costs us reputation, comfort, or control, we start negotiating. Mary was a young woman engaged to be married when an angel told her she would bear the Son of God. In her world, an unexplained pregnancy could cost her the marriage, her good name, and possibly more.
She asked an honest question about how it could happen. Then she said she was the Lord’s servant and let it be according to His word. Her surrender was not a heroic achievement that earned God’s favor. The angel had already told her she was favored, by grace. Her yes was a response to a God who was doing something only He could do. That is the heart of Christmas. God did not wait for us to climb up to Him. In the fullness of time He sent His Son, born of a woman, to redeem us and make us His children. Mary carried the Savior who would one day carry her sins. Like her, we do not save ourselves by saying yes. We say yes because He has come to save. Whatever He is asking of you, trust the One who gave His Son.

Lyrics
[Verse 1]
A shadow fell, a light I’ve never known
He entered in to where I stood alone
He spoke of God’s favor, of birth of a son
But how can it be, for I’ve known no one?
I am the servant, the handmaid of Grace
May Your word to me be fulfilled in this place.
[Chorus]
I am just the vessel, I am just the clay
My soul will sing Your glory
Through the shadows of the day
Let it be to me, according to Your word
The greatest song of mercy
That the world has ever heard
I’m laying down my future, I’m laying down my pride
To carry the Promise with nothing left to hide
My life for Your purpose, my heart for Your throne
In the palm of Your hand, I am never alone
[Verse 2]
The miles were long, the dust was in my throat
A heavy heart beneath a traveler’s coat
No room for the Mother, no bed for the King
Just the breath of the cattle
And the songs that they sing
But the shepherds arrived with a light in their eyes
And the stars whispered secrets
From the Bethlehem skies
The world felt so cold, and the night was so wild
But I held the whole world in the face of my Child.
[Chorus]
I am just the vessel, I am just the clay
My soul will sing Your glory
Through the shadows of the day
Let it be to me, according to Your word
The greatest song of mercy
That the world has ever heard
I’m laying down my future, I’m laying down my pride
To carry the Promise with nothing left to hide
My life for Your purpose, my heart for Your throne
In the palm of Your hand, I am never alone
[Bridge]
There’s a cost to the calling, a sting in the "Go"
A beauty in breaking that the world doesn't know
If the end is a cross, if the end is a grave
It’s a price worth the paying for a world He will save
[Outro]
Be it unto me...
According to Your word.
