It is easy to build a life in which nobody disagrees. The feed learns what you already like. The friends learn which subjects make you cold. Even a church can become a circle that only repeats the sentences you walked in with. After a while you cannot tell a conviction from a habit. Pride gets quiet and confident. It does not have to shout when every voice in the room is yours.
A fool is right in his own eyes. A wise person listens. Better company helps, and it is not the cure. You can gather kinder people and still only hear yourself. The Word of God is living and active. It cuts past the story you tell about your motives and reads the intention underneath. Scripture is not another opinion in the pile. God breathed it so that it would teach, reprove, and correct, including the believer who is tired of being corrected. If your faith has never been interrupted by a page you did not want, you may be devoted to an echo, not to Christ.
Read and be open to the passage that does not flatter you. Let it question the thing you have been defending. We want to shop for a teacher who will sand it down, but Jesus is our Lord, His truth stands, and we should submit to it. Otherwise, why do we call Him Lord? Come under His word, and let it tell you the truth before your crowd does.
Proverbs 12:15 (ESV): “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.”
Hebrews 4:12 (ESV): “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
