Everyday Idols

Track 5 • 3:36
Art for Everyday Idols

The Story

When a group of Israel’s elders came to sit before Ezekiel, they looked like men seeking the LORD. They wanted the prophet to ask God something on their behalf. But God told Ezekiel what He saw: these men had taken their idols into their hearts. There was no statue in the room. The shrine was on the inside, set right in front of their faces, so that everything they looked at, they saw through it. Paul says something just as searching when he calls covetousness idolatry. An idol doesn’t have to be carved. It can be something perfectly ordinary that we’ve started to lean on with our whole weight, asking it to give us what only God can give: worth, safety, relief, or the final say.

So how does an idol come down? Not mainly by trying harder to want it less. The Scottish pastor Thomas Chalmers called it the expulsive power of a new affection. The heart lets go of one love when a greater love takes its place, and that is the gospel’s order. God doesn’t wait for us to clear the shelf first. In Christ He gave Himself for sinners who had loved other things more than Him, and He turns hearts that could never turn themselves. It’s telling that John closes his first letter, five chapters on the Father’s love shown in His Son, with one short line about idols. The love comes first, and the warning rests on it. When something tugs at your heart this week, ask what you were hoping it would give you, and bring that hope to the One who already gave His Son. The Everyday Idols page on this site walks through those questions one idol at a time.

Associated Scripture

Jeremiah 2:13 (ESV): "for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water."

Psalm 115:4-8 (ESV): "Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands. They have mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but do not see. They have ears, but do not hear; noses, but do not smell. They have hands, but do not feel; feet, but do not walk; and they do not make a sound in their throat. Those who make them become like them; so do all who trust in them."

1 John 5:21 (ESV): "Little children, keep yourselves from idols."

Lyrics

[Verse 1] The first light in my morning is a screen A little candle glowing by my bed I bow my head before I find the floor And read who liked me, not a word You said I pour the coffee, check the calendar Every square's a promise I must keep I tell You, Lord, I'll find You after lunch And then it's midnight, and I fall asleep [Pre-Chorus] I never made a statue Never carved a stone But I keep kneeling all day long To little gods I call my own [Chorus] Everyday idols, everyday idols Little gods I carry everywhere They can't hold water, they can't hear a prayer Everyday idols, I didn't know they were there [Verse 2] I check my balance like I check a pulse I read my résumé till I feel sure I sink into the couch at ten p.m. And tell the glow, just one more, just one more I need the last word in every fight I need the kids to prove I'm doing fine They're good things, every one, gifts from Your hand And I made them gods, one at a time [Pre-Chorus] I never made a statue Never carved a stone But I keep kneeling all day long To little gods I call my own [Chorus] Everyday idols, everyday idols Little gods I carry everywhere They can't hold water, they can't hear a prayer Everyday idols, and I'm still kneeling there [Bridge] I left the Fountain for a broken well I chose the water that would never stay But You came looking for this idol maker You took the nails, and turned my face Your way You're the true God, You're the only One Who ever heard a word I had to say [Final Chorus] Everyday idols, everyday idols Little gods I carried everywhere They couldn't hold water, they couldn't hear a prayer Everyday idols, You found me kneeling there You lift my face, and You hear my every prayer [Outro] Everyday idols You found me there You hear my prayer You hear my prayer
