Everyone is thirsty for something. We call it restlessness, boredom, or burnout, and we treat it with what is close at hand: a new purchase, another relationship, more success, endless scrolling, a busier calendar. Each one helps for an evening. Then the ache returns, sometimes louder, because now we are also tired. The emptiness is not a design flaw. It is a sign that we were made for God and keep reaching for smaller things instead.
Through Jeremiah, God named two evils at once. His people walked away from Him, the fountain of living water, and then dug their own cisterns that could not hold water. The problem was not only thirst but where they went to drink. Centuries later Jesus sat by a well with a woman who had tried to fill her life in many ways. He did not lecture her into better choices. He offered Himself, water that becomes a spring inside, welling up to eternal life. That offer comes through His cross, where He took the judgment our wandering deserved. You do not need to fix the hole before you come. You come empty, and He fills. Stop digging, and ask Him for the water only He can give.
Associated Scripture
Jeremiah 2:13 (ESV): "for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water."
John 4:13-14 (ESV): "Jesus said to her, ‘Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’"
[Verse 1]
I tried to patch the hole
With every shiny thing
But it all fell through my hands
Like water through a net
I filled my days with noise
To feel like I was known
Still there was a hollow place
Where I felt all alone
[Pre-Chorus]
I kept running low
I kept coming back
I kept feeling that
There was only lack
[Chorus]
God, heal this hole in my heart
Only You can reach me
Only You can meet me
Right here in the deep
I am done pretending
You are the beginning
You are all I need
[Verse 2]
I wore a hundred smiles
Like armor on my skin
But every room went quiet
When I looked within
The mirror told the truth
The ache was still alive
I need more than breath to live
I need You inside
[Pre-Chorus]
I kept running low
I kept coming back
I kept feeling that
There was more than this lack
[Chorus]
God, heal this hole in my heart
Only You can reach me
Only You can meet me
Right here in the deep
I am done pretending
You are the beginning
You are all I need
[Bridge]
Take the broken room
Take the locked-up door
Take the parts of me
That I can't ignore
I have tried it all
And it still won't stay
Only Your love
Can make me whole today
[Chorus]
God, heal this hole in my heart
Only You can reach me
Only You can meet me
Right here in the deep
I am done pretending
You are the beginning
You are all I need
[Outro]
You can fill my soul
You are all I need
