Some of us do not arrive at the gate empty. We arrive with papers: ministries built, verses memorized, quiet sins carefully hidden, and a title that felt like a pass. The heart idol underneath is pride dressed as usefulness, approval earned by platform, praise, and a résumé of spiritual work. We can love the language of grace and still never truly cross the door. Jesus' hardest warning is not aimed at people who never heard His name. It is aimed at people who used His name while trusting themselves.
He does not turn down what we did as if work itself were the enemy. He turns down what we trusted in. The cross is not an upward climb for the impressive. It is where we drop the heavy load and come with empty hands. Do not bring a trophy to His grace. Lay down the names, the words, and the pride, and ask for mercy while the door is still open. Come to the Son and be made new.
Matthew 7:21-23 (ESV): “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’”
Ephesians 2:8-9 (ESV): "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast."
Titus 3:4-5 (ESV): "But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,"
