Many people who grew up in church carry a quiet idea: grace is how you get in, and after that it is up to you. We were forgiven once, like getting a diploma, and now the job is to manage ourselves and look like a finished Christian. So when the old temper or the old habit shows up again, we either hide it or decide the gift must not have worked. Both answers leave us alone with our own effort.
The gospel says something better and harder. God's mercies are new every morning because we need them every morning. Coming back to Him is not failing the course. It is how His children live. That is not a free pass. Grace does not let us stay comfortable in a sin God has named, because the same grace that forgives also trains us to say no to it. Fruit grows from staying close to Christ, not from trying to pay Him back. You never graduate from needing Him. You keep coming as a child, and He keeps meeting you with mercy.

Lyrics
[Verse 1]
I have known the words for years
I can say them in my sleep
Saved, and then a better version
Of the man I used to be
This morning I was sharp again
Over nothing, over noise
I cleaned it up without a prayer
And called it self-control
[Chorus]
Not a grace graduate
I need You here today
New mercy in the morning
Not a license, not a grade
You finished what I could not
I still come and stay
Not a grace graduate
I need You here today
[Verse 2]
The first time mercy found me
I was sure I would stay new
A week of better mornings
Then the old reply broke through
I thought the slip undid the gift
Or proved I had not learned
You did not take the mercy back
You called me in again
[Chorus]
Not a grace graduate
I need You here today
New mercy in the morning
Not a license, not a grade
You finished what I could not
I still come and stay
Not a grace graduate
I need You here today
[Verse 3]
I want the day to honor You
Not to pay You for the cross
Apart from You I bear no fruit
The trying turns to loss
So I will ask before I strive
The doing follows love
A branch does not invent the fruit
It stays in Him, and fruit comes
[Chorus]
Not a grace graduate
I need You here today
New mercy in the morning
Not a license, not a grade
You finished what I could not
I still come and stay
Not a grace graduate
I need You here today
[Bridge]
Do not hear a free pass in this
Grace will not bless the stay
Inside the sin that He has named
While you walk the other way
Come again, and then get up
The mercy makes you new
Not a graduate, a child
Who still depends on You
[Chorus]
Not a grace graduate
I need You here today
New mercy in the morning
Not a license, not a grade
You finished what I could not
I still come and stay
Not a grace graduate
I need You here today
[Outro]
Not a grace graduate
I need You here today
