Now I Can Go

Art for Now I Can Go

The Story

Most people avoid thinking about death until they have to. We manage it with distraction, medicine, and the hope that it is far away. But underneath, there is a fear Scripture names honestly. Death is an enemy, and apart from Christ we have every reason to dread it.

Simeon was an old man who had been promised by the Holy Spirit that he would see the Lord's Christ before he died. When Mary and Joseph brought the infant Jesus to the temple, Simeon took Him in his arms and praised God. Then he said something remarkable. He was ready to depart in peace. Nothing about his age or health had changed. What had changed was that he had seen God's salvation in a Person.

Anna, a widow who had spent decades in prayer, saw the same Child and began telling everyone who was waiting for redemption.

Peace in the face of death does not come from positive thinking or a vague belief that everyone goes to a better place. It comes from knowing Jesus, who shared our flesh and blood so that through His death He could break the power of death and free those held by fear of it. For those who belong to Him, death is a defeated enemy.

If you fear the end, the answer is not to look away. Look to Jesus. Trust Him, and He gives a peace no diagnosis can take.

Hebrews 2:14–15 (ESV): "Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery."

1 Corinthians 15:55–57 (ESV): "O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."

Lyrics

[Verse 1] An old man in the temple courts, The Spirit on his soul; He had a word from heaven's throne: He'd see the Christ before he'd go. A young mother and a carpenter, Two turtledoves in hand, The Spirit led him to the Child; He knew the Promised Lamb. [Chorus] Now I can go, Lord, now I can go! My eyes have seen Your saving light! A beacon shining for the nations, And Israel's glory burning bright! I held the Promise in my arms, Now I can go! [Verse 2] And Anna, eighty-four and more, Had never left that place; She prayed and fasted night and day Until she saw His face. She lifted up her voice to God And told the waiting crowd: "Redemption for Jerusalem Is here among us now!" [Chorus] Now I can go, Lord, now I can go! My eyes have seen Your saving light! A beacon shining for the nations, And Israel's glory burning bright! I held the Promise in my arms, Now I can go! [Bridge] "A sword will pierce your soul," he said, "The road ahead is long; Through Him the many fall and rise, He'll make the grave His own." So death is not a stranger now, It's just a door to home, I've seen the One who'll conquer it, I do not go alone! [Final Chorus] Now I can go, Lord, now I can go! My eyes have seen Your saving light! A beacon shining for the nations, And Israel's glory burning bright! I held the Promise in my arms, Now I can go! [Outro] In peace, according to Your word... Now I can go.
