Ordinary Coat

Track 6 • 3:18
Art for Ordinary Coat

The Story

We have learned to measure a life by who notices it. If the work is plain — a shift, a kitchen, a quiet obedience nobody posts — we assume it does not count. The other ditch is just as proud: we despise hidden faithfulness and chase a stage so we can feel significant. Both make an idol of being seen.

Scripture cuts the scoreboard down. Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, because the inheritance comes from Him. The Lord does not see as man sees. People weigh the outward appearance. He looks on the heart. Holiness is not a costume for Sundays and a different life the rest of the week. It is ordinary hours offered to Christ: honest work, unrehearsed kindness, telling the truth when it costs, refusing the small lie because He is in the room.

When Samuel was sizing up Jesse’s sons, the Lord rejected the one who looked impressive. That is not a rule that God throws people out for their appearance. It is a warning that we keep grading the wrong thing. Stop waiting for a spectacular assignment before you obey. The weighty thing, most days, is a heart that works for Him when no one is clapping. He sees it. That is enough audience.

Lyrics

[Verse 1] You never make a speech when you walk through the door Just leave a little kindness on the floor You know the cashier's name, you wait when someone's slow You make a crowded room feel safe to grow [Pre-Chorus] And I catch myself choosing grace When I remember the look on your face [Chorus] Some rare kind of faith wears an ordinary coat Shows up with a helping hand and a steady hope You don't say, "Look at me," you simply live it true And somehow I remember what I'm called to do You make me want to love a little deeper Walk a little closer to the One who carries us through Some rare kind of faith shines brightest And we see what God did to you [Verse 2] You pray for the hurting, then you learn their names You bring a meal, you stay through all the rain You're quick to say "I'm sorry," quick to make things right You turn a hard day toward a little light [Pre-Chorus] And I find my heart making room For mercy to bloom in the middle of the gloom [Chorus] Some rare kind of faith wears an ordinary coat Shows up with a helping hand and a steady hope You don't say, "Look at me," you simply live it true And somehow I remember what I'm called to do You make me want to love a little deeper Walk a little closer to the One who carries us through Some rare kind of faith shines brightest And we see what God did to you [Bridge] No grand parade, no perfect words Just faithful love that can be heard In every choice, in every yes You point my heart toward holiness [Final Chorus] Some rare kind of faith wears an ordinary coat Shows up with a helping hand and a steady hope You don't say, "Look at me," you simply live it true And somehow I remember what I'm called to do You make us want to love a little deeper Walk a little closer to the One who carries us through Some rare kind of faith shines brightest And we see what God did to you [Outro] We see what God did to you And we want to be like it too
