Quiet Grace

Track 4 • 4:08
Art for Quiet Grace

The Story

Isaiah once carried an offer to Jerusalem that the city didn’t want. Assyria was on the march, and Judah’s leaders were busy sending envoys and treasure down to Egypt on the backs of donkeys, hoping to buy horses and chariots. God’s answer through the prophet was almost startling: turn back to Him and trust Him quietly, and that would be their strength. The people said no, they would rather ride. Quietness in the Bible isn’t first about a calm room or an empty calendar. It’s what happens in someone who has stopped trying to save themselves. David pictures it in Psalm 131 as a weaned child resting against its mother. A nursing baby fusses and grabs for what it needs, while a weaned child has learned to be content just to be near her.

That kind of quiet can’t be produced by technique. It comes from outside us, and Hebrews tells us where. It calls our hope an anchor for the soul, then names the place that anchor is fastened: beyond the temple curtain, in the inner room the high priest could enter only once a year, and never without blood. Jesus has gone in there ahead of us, and He remains there as our high priest forever. An anchor does its work out of sight, gripping something that doesn’t move while the boat above it rocks. So your peace doesn’t depend on how settled your feelings are this morning. It holds because Jesus is in the Father’s presence for you, and His saving work is finished. Zephaniah even says it is God Himself who quiets His people by His love. If you’ve been running toward your own version of Egypt, with more plans, more backups and more fixes, you’re invited to turn around. His offer hasn’t changed.

Associated Scripture

Isaiah 30:15 (ESV): "For thus said the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel, “In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.” But you were unwilling,"

Psalm 131:1-2 (ESV): "O LORD, my heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me. But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me."

Hebrews 6:19-20 (ESV): "We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek."

Lyrics

[Verse 1] The room is quiet as the morning starts to wake No heavy burdens left for me to take The simple sunlight falls across the floor I am not searching for a sign anymore [Chorus] There is a peace that holds me through the night A quiet grace that makes the shadows light In Jesus' love, my heart has found its rest A steady anchor in a quiet breast [Verse 2] The world keeps moving with its rush and sound But here in silence, holy ground is found No endless striving, no more fear to prove Just standing still inside this tender love [Chorus] There is a peace that holds me through the night A quiet grace that makes the shadows light In Jesus' love, my heart has found its rest A steady anchor in a quiet breast [Bridge] Softly spoken, calm and true Every worry fades from view Held so gently, safe and still Surrendered to a peaceful will [Outro] Safe and steady Calm and true My heart is quiet Here with You
