The Face I Wear

Track 6 • 3:40
Art for The Face I Wear

The Story

Many of us learn a church costume early: look steady, sound fine, keep the conversation light so no one has to deal with the real weather inside. Anger, confusion, late bills, tired faith — all saved for the quiet drive home. We call it strength. Heaven calls it hiding.

God is not impressed by the performance. He already sees the face under the mask. The Psalms teach us that honest lament is not a lack of faith; it is faith that keeps talking when feelings do not cooperate. Pretending the bruise is gone does not heal it. Bringing the bruise to Jesus does.

So drop the costume-holiness. You do not have to be polished to pray. Come as you are, unfinished and tired. Honest prayer beats a hundred borrowed phrases. Keep talking to Him when you have nothing impressive left. He stays with the aching — not the actors.

Associated Scripture

Psalm 62:8 (ESV): "Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us."

Hebrews 4:13 (ESV): "And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account."

Suno Style Prompt: Indie folk, intimate baritone lead with restrained phrasing, steady midtempo brushed-snare backbeat, tape echo and wide stereo reverb, fingerpicked guitar ostinato and muted electric guitar chugs over low string drones, moog bass pulse, and warm analog pads; bridge dropouts give way to a surging final chorus

Lyrics

[Verse 1] I smooth my shirt before I leave And practice saying, “I’m all right” At church they ask how I have been I give the answer dressed up nice [Pre-Chorus] But on the drive back home I ask How much more can one heart hold? [Chorus] God, You see the face I wear The careful smile, the measured words You know the anger underneath The questions I have never learned I don’t know why these roads were mine Or what Your silence means today But here I am, still talking to You With nothing polished left to say [Verse 2] The sink is full, the bills are late A friend says, “You’re so strong,” and leaves I fold the laundry, count to ten Then wonder what You want from me [Pre-Chorus] I’m tired of being brave on cue Tired of hiding every bruise [Chorus] God, You see the face I wear The careful smile, the measured words You know the anger underneath The questions I have never learned I don’t know why these roads were mine Or what Your silence means today But here I am, still talking to You With nothing polished left to say [Bridge] If faith is only one small breath Then take this one; it’s all I’ve got I won’t pretend the hurt is gone I’ll meet You here among the knots [Final Chorus] God, You see the face I wear And all the cracks I tried to hide Stay with me inside this ache While I keep walking by Your side I don’t know when the road turns clear Or when my heart will feel okay But here I am, still talking to You And that is all I have today [Outro] No practiced smile, no borrowed phrase Just stay with me through one more day
