The Story

It is easy to wait for someone else to step up. We tell ourselves we are not qualified, not the type, not ready, and meanwhile the need sits in front of us. In Deborah’s day, Israel had been crushed for twenty years by a commander with nine hundred iron chariots. The men who should have led were hesitant. Barak would only go if Deborah went with him. Some tribes stayed home altogether.

Deborah’s courage did not come from confidence in herself. When she told Barak to rise, her reason was that the Lord had already given the enemy into his hand and the Lord was going out before him. That is the key. The victory belonged to God before anyone marched. Even the weather fought for Israel, as Deborah’s song says, and the final blow came through an unlikely woman in a tent. God loves to work through people the world overlooks, so that no one can boast. The same pattern runs to the cross, where God won the greatest battle through apparent weakness and shame. Availability is not a heroic trait we produce. It is a response to a God who goes first. If you are holding back, ask Him to make you willing, and step into what He has already promised to do.
