The Word Became Flesh

Track 11 • 3:47
Art for The Word Became Flesh

The Story

Many people picture God as an idea: a force, a feeling, a distant higher power you can believe in without being changed. That kind of God is comfortable because He asks nothing and comes no closer than we allow.

John opens his Gospel with something far more startling. The eternal Word, who was with God and was God, through whom everything was made, became flesh and lived among us. The Creator entered His creation as a baby. He did not stop being God. He took on a full human nature. The Son who holds all things together grew up in an ordinary town, learned a trade, got tired, and obeyed His parents.

This changes how we know God. We do not have to guess what He is like. Jesus shows us. In Him we see grace and truth together, holiness that does not crush and love that does not compromise.

It also changes what salvation is. God did not stay far off and tell us to climb up to Him. He came down to us, and He went all the way to the cross to make sinners right with Him. To everyone who receives Him and believes in His name, He gives the right to become children of God, born not by human effort but by God.

If God has been an abstraction to you, look at Jesus. God has made Himself known, and He invites you to know Him personally.

Lyrics

[Intro] In the beginning was the Word... [Verse 1] The One who spoke and stars appeared Learned to say His mother's name. The hands that hung the galaxies Reached for Mary just the same. All things were made through Him on high, And now the Voice that called the light Lets out a newborn cry. [Pre-Chorus] He did not cling to heaven's crown, He laid His royal glory down. [Chorus] The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, Heaven's heart in human bone! Full of grace and full of truth, We have seen His glory shown! The Word became flesh, the Word became flesh, God came close to bring us home. [Verse 2] The Maker of the morning light Woke up weary from the road. The Bread of Heaven felt the hunger, Learned a trade and bore the load. He took the form of servant here, Wore our weakness, bore our frame— Not less than God, but God made man, Forevermore the same. [Bridge] He pitched His tent with sinners, He walked our dusty street, And let those maker-hands be pierced To make our peace complete! To all who did receive Him, Who believed upon His name, He gave the right to be God's children, Born of God, set free from shame! [Final Chorus] The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, Heaven's heart in human bone! Full of grace and full of truth, We have seen His glory shown! The Word became flesh, the Word became flesh, God came close to bring us home! [Outro] In the beginning was the Word... And the Word came close.
