Treadmill

Track 2 • 4:14
Art for Treadmill

The Story

You came to Christ honestly, and then the Christian life turned into a score. The morning prayer got counted. The temper got managed. A quiet fear moved in: if you stop producing, God will count you out. You are exhausted, and you call the exhaustion faithfulness. At the end of the day the fear is the same fear you woke up with. That is not grit. It is a bargain.

Paul asks people who began by the Spirit why they are now trying to be perfected by the flesh. Wages are what a worker is owed. Salvation is not a wage. By grace you have been saved through faith, and that is not your own doing. It is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. The God who justifies is the God who justifies the ungodly. He does not justify the impressive and then let the tired ones try to catch up.

Get out of the bargain. That is not laziness. It is believing Him. Then obey because you are already His, not in order to become His. The commands are real. They are not a bill for a gift you were already given. Christ finished the work your effort keeps trying to complete.

Lyrics

[Verse 1] Read the new manual, keep on the track Watch your performance, never look back I'm paying my penance with a checklist of rules Trying to get clean using broken down tools The standards are moving, the bar is too high And I'm running out of breath just trying to comply [Pre-Chorus] It's a relentless motor and it forces the pace Running so hard but you stay in place [Chorus] Oh, you can't buy your freedom with the works of your hands! Sinking in the dust of your own demands! You're running on a treadmill that will never find rest Trying to earn the badge on a righteous chest Stop building a savior out of straw and stone When the only saving work was at the cross alone! [Verse 2] I wave the right banners and I sign the decree Hoping that the culture will validate me But the machine keeps turning, the belt is too fast And I'm haunted by the ghost of a compromised past A secular courtroom with a gravel-cold floor Where the treadmill keeps spinning and they ask for more [Pre-Chorus] It's a relentless motor and it forces the pace Running so hard but you stay in place [Chorus] Oh, you can't buy your freedom with the works of your hands! Sinking in the dust of your own demands! You're running on a treadmill that will never find rest Trying to earn the badge on a righteous chest Stop building a savior out of straw and stone When the only saving work was at the cross alone! [Bridge] But I hear a voice calling through the heavy strain It breaks every link of this checklist chain It says "It is finished," the price has been paid No more heavy burdens that the world has made My righteousness is given, it is not earned From the spinning machine, my feet have turned... [Modified Chorus] Yeah, I found my freedom from the works of my hands! Stepping off the ledge of those shifting sands! I'm off of the treadmill and my soul is at rest Wearing His righteousness upon my chest No building a savior out of straw and stone For the only saving work was at the cross alone! [Outro] It is finished. My soul is at rest. No more treadmills.
