Two Tables (Proverbs 9)

Track 10 • 4:30
Art for Two Tables (Proverbs 9)

The Story

Proverbs 9 closes the long opening section of the book and puts the whole argument into one scene. Two women host two dinners, and both send the same invitation to the same people. Wisdom has done all the work. She has built the house, prepared the meat, mixed the wine and sent her servants out. Folly has prepared nothing. She sits at her door and borrows Wisdom's words, offering what was never hers to give. That is still how temptation works. It rarely invents a new promise. It copies the promise of life, offers it without God, and adds the thrill of secrecy. Between the two invitations the chapter turns to correction. The scoffer hates being reproved and gets worse, while the wise welcome it and grow. How we take a rebuke shows which table we are already leaning toward.

The simple in Proverbs are not stupid. They are open and unformed, ready to follow whichever voice reaches them first, which describes most of us more often than we admit. The good news is that the simple are exactly who Wisdom invites. She does not ask her guests to become wise before they come. Paul says Christ Jesus became wisdom from God for us, and Jesus called Himself the bread of life. He set the better table at His own cost, taking on Himself the death that Folly's guests had earned, and He rose to bring them home. The fear of the Lord, then, is not cringing dread. It is the reverent trust of someone who has been fed. If you have been eating at the wrong table, you are the kind of guest He calls, and His door is still open.

Lyrics

[Verse 1] She carved out seven pillars tall To hang her rafters over all The cedar timbers swept and clean The rarest supper ever seen She killed the beast, she dressed the vine And set her table, mixed her wine She sends her girls up the hilltop trail To call the simple, the weak, the frail: "Turn in, you traveler with empty hands Who drifted through the desert sands Leave off your wandering and pride The feast is free, step inside" [Pre-Chorus] No price is asked, no wage to pay Just lay your heavy load away [Chorus] Two tables on the highest hill Two voices calling, calling still The bread is broke, the lines are drawn One leads to night, one to the dawn Leave your simple ways and live Come eat the bread that Wisdom gives [Verse 2] Up on the ridge a screakin' door Hangs crooked on a twist of wire She rocks upon a splintered floor Fanning a blind, deceitful fire Watching the weary, working crowd She calls out bold, she whispers loud: "Turn in here, the road is hot! Drink what the master never bought Stolen water cools the bone Sweetest bread is ate unknown" She hides the cellar hatch from sight Where dead men wander in the night [Pre-Chorus] She promises an easy bed To take the soul and leave you dead [Chorus] Two tables on the highest hill Two voices calling, calling still The bread is broke, the lines are drawn One leads to night, one to the dawn Leave your simple ways and live Come eat the bread that Wisdom gives [Bridge] Correct a scorner, he'll spit and curse He hates the truth and he makes it worse Rebuke the wise, he'll bow his head And love the hand by which he's fed The fear of the Lord is where wisdom's begun To know the Holy One is the morning sun A fool will swallow his own decay A wise man learns, and he walks the way [Verse 3] The dusk is falling on the pine The shadows lengthen on the town Two invitations in a line Before the lantern lights go down One gives you life to keep and hold One leaves you in the graveyard cold [Chorus] Two tables on the highest hill Two voices calling, calling still The bread is broke, the lines are drawn One leads to night, one to the dawn Leave your simple ways and live Come eat the bread that Wisdom gives [Outro] Seven carved pillars Or a cellar dug deep The table is spread Which promise to keep? Turn in, and live
