If you have ever lived with a dog that gets the zoomies, you know the moment. Out of a dead sleep she is up and racing laps through the house after something nobody else can see. She never quite catches it, and she loves every second anyway. It is funny because it is innocent. God made His creatures with that kind of joy, and it is right to laugh and enjoy it. But it can also hold up a mirror. Many of us live a quieter version of the same sprint, and ours is not play. We chase the next promotion, the next purchase, the next bit of approval, sure that this time we will close the gap. The prize keeps staying just out of reach, and we call the restlessness ambition. Scripture has an honest name for that kind of chase: striving after wind.
The good news is that the chase was never meant to end with us catching something. It ends with us being caught. Jesus does not tell tired people to run faster. He tells them to come to Him, and He gives them rest. That rest is not a reward we earn after the last lap. It is what His finished work on the cross gives to people who stop treating their own effort as their salvation. The psalmist even says that God gives sleep to the ones He loves, which means lying down can be an act of trust instead of a collapse from exhaustion. So enjoy the laughter. Delight in the creatures He made and the play He built into them. Then ask yourself what you have been running after that never stays caught. Bring that chase to Christ, the One who is never out of reach. Lie down where He has made you safe, and rest like someone who is loved.
Ecclesiastes 1:14 (ESV): "I have seen everything that is done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind."
Matthew 11:28 (ESV): "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
Psalm 127:2 (ESV): "It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep."
Psalm 104:24 (ESV): "O LORD, how manifold are your works! In wisdom have you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures."
