Cross in the Cradle

Track 12 • 3:12
Art for Cross in the Cradle

The Story

Christmas is the most sentimental season of the year. Soft light, a sleeping baby, peace on earth. None of that is wrong, but it can become a way to enjoy Jesus without facing why He came. A baby asks nothing of us. A crucified and risen King does.

Scripture never separates the manger from the cross. Jesus said He came not to be served but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many. From the beginning, His birth was aimed at His death. He was born under the law to redeem those under the law, born in a body so that He could offer that body as a sacrifice for sin. The wood and the straw were only the start of a road that led to a hill outside Jerusalem.

And the story does not end at the tomb. Jesus rose, ascended, and promised to return. One day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that He is Lord.

For nominal Christians, this is the question Christmas presses on us. Have we kept Jesus in the cradle, safe and sweet, or have we received Him as the Savior who died for our sins and the King who is coming back? Don't settle for a seasonal Jesus. Come to the one who was born to save you, and live ready for His return.

Lyrics

[Verse 1] When the fullness of time had come, God sent His only Son, Born of a woman, born under law, To rescue all who come. The simple wood of the manger bed, The straw on a quiet night, Were pointing up to a rugged hill Where the midday lost its light. [Pre-Chorus] He did not come here to be served, He came to pay the price, To give His life as ransom for us! [Chorus] There's a cross in the cradle, There's a crown on the way! He will conquer the grave, He was born to save! From the manger to the victory won, There's a cross in the cradle, Come, Lord Jesus, come! [Verse 2] The tiny hands in Mary's hair Would one day take the nails; The voice that cried inside the stall Would triumph where we failed. "It is finished!" He cried out, And walked out of the tomb! Now all who trust Him are His children, Born of God, made new! [Pre-Chorus] He did not come here to be served, He came to pay the price, To bring us from death to life! [Chorus] There's a cross in the cradle, There's a crown on the way! He will conquer the grave, He was born to save! From the manger to the victory won, There's a cross in the cradle, Come, Lord Jesus, come! [Bridge] He is coming back, coming back as King! Every knee will bow, every tongue will sing! He is coming soon, tearing through the night, Every eye will see His returning light! He is coming back, coming back as King, Every eye will see when the heavens ring! [Final Chorus] There's a cross in the cradle, There's a crown on the way! He will conquer the grave, He was born to save! From the manger to the victory won, There's a cross in the cradle, Come, Lord Jesus, come! [Outro] There's a cross in the cradle... Come, Lord Jesus, come.
