Every day we are surrounded by voices telling us how to live. Some are loud and some are polished, and most of them promise that if we follow them we will finally have our lives together. Few of us leave God in one dramatic step. We just keep choosing the voice that is easiest to hear, until the way we live has drifted far from the way we meant to go. Scripture pictures wisdom as someone standing in the busiest public places, calling out to ordinary people and not hiding in a monastery or a library. The invitation is open, and it is meant for you. It also says something sobering. Ignoring that voice is not neutral, because the road without wisdom hurts the people who walk it.
For a nominal Christian, the good news is that wisdom is more than a set of rules to get right. The New Testament says Christ Himself is the wisdom of God, and that every treasure of wisdom and knowledge is hidden in Him. That changes the picture. We are not climbing toward a life we have to figure out on our own. We are being invited into a relationship with the One who already holds it. Because of Him we are given what we could never earn: forgiveness for the times we followed the wrong voice, a new standing before God, and the Spirit to help us change. So do not treat the Bible as a manual for fixing yourself. Open it to meet Him. Ask for ears that recognize His voice over the others, and trust that He is not hard to find for the one who is looking.
Proverbs 8:1-4 (ESV): "Does not wisdom call? Does not understanding raise her voice? On the heights beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand; beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries aloud: 'To you, O men, I call, and my cry is to the children of man.'"
Proverbs 8:35-36 (ESV): "For whoever finds me finds life and obtains favor from the Lord, but he who fails to find me injures himself; all who hate me love death."
1 Corinthians 1:24 (ESV): "but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God."
1 Corinthians 1:30 (ESV): "And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption,"
Colossians 2:3 (ESV): "in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge."
