Death in the church is not a theory. It is a quiet house, a voice you will not hear on the phone, a Sunday where their place is empty. Nominal comfort says not to be sad, as if grief were unbelief. Paul says the opposite. Christians do grieve. They just do not grieve like people who have no hope.
The hope is not that your loved one was impressive enough to earn heaven. The hope is Jesus: He died and rose, and God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Him. A believer finishes the race the way Paul describes it — not by a spotless performance, but by a faith kept because Christ kept them, with a crown laid up by the righteous Judge for all who have loved His appearing. Their story is not cut off. It is ahead of yours, hidden with Christ until the day you see Him too.
Cry. Do not lie to yourself that the absence is small. And do not bury them as if the grave gets the last word. The same Lord who called them will call you. Grief and resurrection hope are allowed in the same room.
Associated Scripture
1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 (ESV): "But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep."
2 Timothy 4:7-8 (ESV): "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing."
[Verse 1]
There's a silence in the hallway where your laughter used to ring
An unfinished conversation, and a song we used to sing
The world keeps moving forward, but my clock is standing still
Learning how to breathe around the space you used to fill
[Chorus]
But I know you're safe with Jesus, and your eyes have seen His face
You have run the race before me, you have finished in His grace
And though the ache is heavy, and the tears fall like the rain
I hold to the assurance that we'll meet and laugh again
[Verse 2]
Clinging to the promises that whisper to my soul
He heals the brokenhearted, and He makes the shattered whole
You aren't just in my memories, you're ahead of me in time
A temporary parting in a symphony sublime
[Chorus]
'Cause I know you're safe with Jesus, and your eyes have seen His face
You have run the race before me, you have finished in His grace
And though the ache is heavy, and the tears fall like the rain
I hold to the assurance that we'll meet and laugh again
[Bridge]
Oh, death has lost its victory, and the grave has lost its sting
Beyond the veil of shadows, I can hear the angels sing
You're finally fully healed now, walking streets of solid gold
Safe inside the greatest arms a soul could ever hold
[Outro]
It's just a little while longer that I have to walk this road
And just a few more miles to carry all this heavy load
So goodbye for now, my loved one, go and rest in perfect peace
Until the Savior calls my name and all my longings cease
When He calls me home we can praise Him for all time
