My Present Victory

Track 10 • 3:38
Art for My Present Victory

The Story

It is easy to file the cross as something that happened to you once. You prayed a prayer, got the label "Christian," and went back to managing yourself: the sharp mouth, the private compromise, the pride that must win the argument. The idol is self-reform. Jesus becomes a past event. You become your own ongoing savior, and you are tired because it is not working.

Union with Christ is present tense. You died with Him, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. The death He died, He died to sin once for all; the life He lives, He lives to God — so consider yourself dead to sin and alive to God in Him. That is not a memory to admire. It is how you walk into today’s temptation. Grace is not permission to stay in the old life. Grace is Christ Himself as your life now, which means you actually put sin to death and you actually come to Him for help before you white-knuckle another vow.

Stop treating salvation like a ticket you already used. Confess the sin you keep renegotiating. Then live today as someone whose life is Christ — not someone polishing an old self and hoping God is impressed.

Lyrics

[Verse 1] I used to treat the wooden tree Like an ancient gate I passed right through A ticket stamped to set me free Before I went back to what I knew I tried to fix my bitter tongue With vows that crumbled in the cold Holding my breath until I broke Trading the new man for the old [Chorus] Your cross is daily bread The grace on which I'm fed I lay my kingdoms down To wear the thorny crown Oh, not my life, but You in me— Jesus, my present victory! Jesus, my present victory! [Verse 2] When pride demands I take the stand To prove that I was in the right When comfort turns into a king That keeps me scheming through the night I run to Hebrews four sixteen A throne of mercy opened wide You pull the thorn from out my chest And kill the phantom of my pride [Chorus] Your cross is daily bread The grace on which I'm fed I lay my kingdoms down To wear the thorny crown Oh, not my life, but You in me— Jesus, my present victory! Jesus, my present victory! [Bridge] It is no longer I who live I drop the judge's heavy gavel Nothing left to hoard or give The old has died, the debt is clear And my living King is here! [Chorus] Your cross is daily bread The grace on which I'm fed I lay my kingdoms down To wear the thorny crown Oh, not my life, but You in me— Jesus, my present victory! Jesus, my present victory! [Outro] Daily bread… Grace on which I'm fed… You live in me.
