As David Gibbs tells it, the account comes from his longtime friend Earle Lee, who traveled to Russia in August 1991 and sat in one of the first open services of a church that had met in secret for some thirty years. A pastor there testified that Soviet authorities had jailed him again and again for refusing to stop preaching. On his fifth arrest they brought in his oldest daughter and promised to deafen her with hot pokers and cut out her tongue unless he signed a statement denying Jesus. She looked at her father and begged him not to deny Christ for her sake. He refused, they carried out the threat, and later they did the same to his two younger daughters. Years afterward, as their father spoke, three grown women sat together while an interpreter signed the service to them. When Lee asked whether they were bitter toward God, they answered in sign, smiling, that it had simply been their reasonable service.
Notice that those daughters did not call it heroism. They called it ordinary, the fitting response of people who had first received mercy. Scripture describes the whole Christian life as an offering, a self laid before God in response to His mercy. Most of us will never face a cell, but we face smaller trades every week: silence for acceptance, compromise for ease, a quiet faith that costs us nothing. The same Lord who carried the persecuted church carries ordinary believers through ordinary pressure. If you fear you would fold, bring that fear to Him rather than hiding it. Your security rests on Christ's faithfulness, not yours, and He was wounded precisely so that nothing could separate His people from Him.

Romans 8:38-39 (ESV): "For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord."
John 10:28 (ESV): "I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand."
Matthew 10:32-33 (ESV): "So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven."
Revelation 12:11 (ESV): "And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death."
