I Won't Lose the Faith

Art for I Won't Lose the Faith

The Story

It shakes people when a public Christian walks away. A pastor, a singer, a hero you built a young faith on — and then the feed says none of it was real. The heart’s question is not academic. It is this: if he could not stay, what chance do I have? The idol hiding in the panic is a person. We rested the weight of our souls on someone with a microphone.

Jesus already warned that some hear with joy and last only until heat comes. John writes that some went out from us because they were not of us; if they had been, they would have continued. That sentence is severe, and it is mercy. It explains a kind of leaving. It does not give us the right to close the book on one person’s soul from a post. What it does say is that someone’s collapse does not erase the Truth, and that a faith resting on a personality was never resting on Christ. The race is endured by looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of faith — not by watching who is still famous.

Grieve the loss if you need to. Do not follow them off the road. Open the Scriptures and ask whether your faith is in a personality or in the crucified and risen Lord. Heroes can step down. He does not. Keep your eyes there, and let their leaving make you more careful about where you stand, not less sure that He stands.

Associated Scripture

Hebrews 12:1-2 (ESV): "Let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God."

1 John 2:19 (ESV): "They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us."

Lyrics

[Verse 1] I was ten years old in the third-row seat Lost in the smoke machine and the heavy beat You were on the stage with a silver tongue Singing anthems of a fire that would stay young I watched you weep, I watched you pray I built my house on the words you'd say Ten years later, I'm reading your feed You pulled back the curtain on everything you don't believe [Verse 2] Now the stadium's dark and the spotlight's dead And I'm holding your old CD instead You posted a letter, you called it a phase Left your leather-bound Bible in a dust-covered daze And it shakes my bones, it thins my breath To see a giant choose a spiritual death If the man at the front throws his shield in the mud What chance do I have out here in the flood? [Pre-Chorus] Is it something you just turn on? Is it something you just turn off? Did your roots hit the rock when the summer got hot? Was it real or a beautiful fraud? But I open my eyes through the fear and the doubt And I see what this shaking is all about [Chorus] I won't follow the prophet of a temporary spark I won't follow the singer who goes blind in the dark If the foundation you built was just powder and clay That doesn't mean the Truth has faded away You left me behind, you stepped off the line But my eyes are on Jesus, and His light will shine [Verse 3] I opened the Book With a trembling hand. Searching the pages For a place to stand. I read of a seed... it grew overnight Bursting with green in the morning light But the soil was shallow. The rock was right there. When the sun came up, the ground was bare. And John wrote a line that cuts like a knife: "If they were of us, they'd have stayed for life." [Verse 4] I confess I looked at a pedestal of dust I trusted a man when it's Jesus I need to trust You can burn so bright, you can make a grand sound Then wither away to the ash on the ground But the Cross isn't empty because you walked away And the tomb is still open, no matter what you say [Bridge] Let the heavy smoke machine die Let the flashing spotlights go blind Let the heroes fall from the sky Leave the broken stages behind I will plant my roots in the ground Past the noise and past the applause I am tracking Jesus's sound I am following Him to the Cross! [Chorus] I won't follow the prophet of a temporary spark I won't follow the singer who goes blind in the dark If the foundation you built was just powder and clay That doesn't mean the Truth has faded away You left me behind, you stepped off the line But my eyes are on Jesus, and His light will shine [Outro] The fog cleared out The stage went cold But the King on the throne Never loses His hold Keep my roots deep... My faith is on You.
