Seal of the King

Track 8 • 4:09
Art for Seal of the King

The Story

A lot of church people collect proof that they belong. Years in the pew, a role on Sunday, a night when they felt something strong. When the feeling thins, they start polishing the proof. Belonging has quietly become a project, and the fear under it is simple: if I cannot point to a mark I maintained, I may not be His.

Paul locates the mark somewhere else. In Christ, when you heard the gospel and believed, you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit. The Spirit is the guarantee, a down payment of an inheritance you did not purchase, until God redeems His possession, to the praise of His glory. God is the one who establishes His people in Christ, anoints them, and puts His seal on them. A seal is the King's act, not a badge the servant shines. It is given to people who believed the gospel, not to people who managed a mood.

If you have trusted Christ, stop auditing yourself for a shinier mark. Assurance grows by looking at His promise, not by curating evidence of your seriousness. If you have only borrowed the language, do not try to feel sealed. Hear the gospel and believe it. The Spirit is God's own pledge that He keeps the people Christ redeemed. The glory in that sentence is His.

Associated Scripture

Ephesians 1:13–14 (ESV): “In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.”

2 Corinthians 1:21–22 (ESV): “And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.”

Lyrics

[Verse 1] We paint our walls and we lock the gate We find comfort in a common hate You wear a shadow that is not like mine You speak a truth that I cannot align So I strip the color from your human frame And reduce your spirit to a bitter name [Pre-Chorus] It's so easy when the world is small To build a monster just behind the wall [Chorus] Imago Dei, the seal of the King Stamped on the broken and the suffering Look past the anger, look past the shade You carry the face that the Maker made Imago Dei, the seal of the King [Verse 2] I forgot the stamp upon your soul Long before the lines took full control When I make an enemy of what I see I break the mirror that was meant for me [Chorus] Imago Dei, the seal of the King Stamped on the broken and the suffering Look past the anger, look past the shade You carry the face that the Maker made Imago Dei, the seal of the King [Bridge] Picture the face that you cannot bear The voice that makes you want to curse and tear Look through the dust, look through the war And see the reflection we were looking for [Chorus] Imago Dei, the seal of the King Stamped on the broken and the suffering Look past the anger, look past the shade You carry the face that the Maker made Imago Dei, the seal of the King [Outro] The face the Maker made. Imago Dei.
