The Shepherds Weren't Invited

Art for The Shepherds Weren't Invited

The Story

Many people feel like outsiders to God. Some never grew up in church. Some show up once a year and slip out before anyone notices. Some are carrying things they are sure would disqualify them. The quiet assumption is that God is for the polished people.

Look at who heard the news first. Not priests in the temple or rulers in the palace, but shepherds working through the night, ordinary laborers with no standing. God sent His angels to them. Then He did the same thing all through Jesus' life. Jesus ate with tax collectors, touched lepers, welcomed children, and said He came to call sinners, not the righteous.

That does not mean being an outsider earns God's favor. Shepherds needed a Savior as much as kings did. It means no one is too ordinary, too late, or too far gone to be welcomed. The good news was for all the people, and every person who comes to Jesus finds He does not turn them away.

The shepherds did two things. They went to see what God had told them about, and then they went back to their ordinary work praising God and telling others. Faith did not change their job. It changed their hearts. If you feel like you are standing at the edge, the invitation is real. Come and see the Savior, and then go tell someone what you found.

Lyrics

[Verse 1] Nobody saved a seat for them At the table or the feast Just night shift men who smelled of sheep The last in line, the least They didn't dress for heaven's news They didn't know the words to pray But the sky split open over them And glory found them anyway [Chorus] The shepherds weren't invited They were never on the world's list But God sent word to the night shift first So nobody would be missed If you're standing at the back door Friend, He came for folks like this So nobody would be missed [Verse 2] Maybe you slip in Christmas Eve And stand behind the last row's pew Everybody knows the songs by heart And nobody seems to know you You worked a double, missed the meal Or you're carrying what you've done Don't think there's any room for you? There was no room for God's own Son [Chorus] The shepherds weren't invited They were never on the world's list But God sent word to the night shift first So nobody would be missed If you're standing at the back door Friend, He came for folks like this So nobody would be missed [Bridge] They ran to find what they'd been told A Savior in the straw Went back to fields still dark and cold Telling everyone they saw [Final Chorus] The shepherds weren't invited They were never on the world's list But God sent word to the night shift first So nobody would be missed If you're standing at the back door Friend, He came for folks like this So nobody would be missed So nobody would be missed [Outro] You were never on the world's list But He came for folks like this
