Some of us bruise at a word and then build a wall so it never happens again. The wall works. It also kills love. We get hard toward God, suspicious of people, and proud of how little we feel. Others stay porous and bitter, saving every slight as proof that no one is safe. Both are the old heart. Numbness gets mistaken for strength. Touchiness gets mistaken for honesty.
God does not tell His people to grow a shell. He promises a transplant. "I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh." A living heart can still be wounded. That is the point. It can also repent, forgive, and stay near. Paul tells the church to be kind and tenderhearted, forgiving one another, because God in Christ forgave them. Tenderness is not naivete. It is a heart kept soft by mercy: able to tell the truth without becoming cruel, and able to take a hit without making bitterness a home.
Ask Him for that heart. Where you have nursed a grudge, name it as sin. Where you have been crushed, do not confuse a locked chest with faith. Christ was wounded and did not turn to stone. He can make you steady without making you hard.

[Verse 1]
I used to bruise so fast
One small word, and I'd fold
Kept a lock on my chest
And the fire went cold
Living out of my fear
Building walls in the dark
Every slight left a scar
On a bitter mark
[Chorus 1 - Subdued]
Thin skin, hardened heart
That was the life in me
Thin skin, hardened heart
Bound and so far from free
Thin skin, hardened heart
Trapped in my bitter pride
Thin skin, hardened heart
With nowhere left to hide
[Verse 2]
Then You met me in the mess
Healing every crack
You brought me to the cross
And turned my heart of stone
Now I can bless the ones
Who cannot pay me back
I hold out steady grace
Where pride used to react
[Pre-Chorus]
Now I can take the rain
It doesn't break me down
You gave me holy weight
So I can stand my ground
[Chorus 2 - Anthemic]
Thick skin, tender heart
That's what You gave to me
Thick skin, tender heart
Alive and truly free
Thick skin, tender heart
I'm anchored in Your love
Thick skin, tender heart
You're changing me, Lord
[Bridge]
Tear down the walls in me
Where pride had made a home
Break off the heavy chains
That made me walk alone
I'm steady in Your grace
Soft where it matters most
Strong enough to stay
Close enough to hope
[Final Chorus - Full Energy]
Thick skin, tender heart
That's what You gave to me
Thick skin, tender heart
Alive and truly free
Thick skin, tender heart
I'm anchored in Your love
Thick skin, tender heart
You're changing me, Lord
[Outro]
No more hardened heart...
Thick skin, tender heart.
