Art for Turn the Static Down

The Story

The show stays on. The playlist runs into the next one. The conversation in your pocket never ends. Silence feels like a problem to solve, so you solve it before a thought can finish. Under the noise there is often a fear of what would be left if it stopped: a grief, a conviction, a God you have been outrunning with volume.

Elijah had seen fire fall on the mountain. Then Jezebel swore she would kill him, and he was afraid, and he ran, and he asked to die. God sent wind, earthquake, and fire, and He was in none of them. After the fire came the sound of a low whisper. The spectacular was not where He met His worn-out prophet. Depression and fear in that cave were not a verdict that God had abandoned him. Your own noise is not proof He is angry, and quiet is not a technique that forces Him to speak. Martha was pulled apart by many things. Jesus said one thing was necessary. Mary sat and received from Him, and that portion would not be taken away. The point was not a calmer lifestyle. The point was Christ.

Turn one thing off and open the Scriptures before you fill the gap. Do not hunt a feeling and call it His voice. Ask Him to press the Word He already gave, and do the one thing it makes plain. He is not hiding inside the noise. He has already spoken in His Son.

Associated Scripture

1 Kings 19:11–12 (ESV): “And he said, ‘Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord.’ And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.”

Luke 10:41–42 (ESV): “But the Lord answered her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.’”

Lyrics

[Verse 1] A quiet whisper running down the street A bitter headline underneath our feet You feed the fire with a calculated word And pass along a story that you only halfway heard Now we look across the fences that we made Blinking at each other through a poison shade [Pre-Chorus] We drink the static from a glowing screen And call it justice when we act so mean [Chorus] Turn the static down, clear the heavy air We are splintering the world we\'re meant to share You can't build a home on a bed of clever lies With a heart of anger and suspicion in your eyes Turn the static down, clear the heavy air [Verse 2] The propaganda teaches us the game To spot a stranger and assign the blame We take a single fraction of the truth And use it as a weapon in a voting booth [Chorus] Turn the static down, clear the heavy air We are splintering the world we\'re meant to share You can't build a home on a bed of clever lies With a heart of anger and suspicion in your eyes Turn the static down, clear the heavy air [Bridge] I want to look at you without the fear To find the honest voice we used to hear The walls of bitterness are growing high and tall But mercy has the power just to break them all [Chorus] Turn the static down, clear the heavy air We are splintering the world we\'re meant to share You can't build a home on a bed of clever lies With a heart of anger and suspicion in your eyes Turn the static down, clear the heavy air [Outro] Clear the heavy air. Turn the static down.
