December can turn love into a ledger. We keep track of who spent what, whether the gift was enough, whether we will be judged. Underneath the shopping is often a deeper fear: that love has to be earned and kept by performance. We bring that same instinct to God. We try to make up for our failures with effort and good intentions, hoping it adds up.
The gospel cuts straight through that. Salvation is not a trade. Paul says it is by grace through faith, and not our own doing, so that no one can boast. Eternal life is a free gift, while what we have earned on our own is death. God did not send His Son as a reward for good people. He sent Him to sinners who could never repay Him.
That is hard news for proud hearts and wonderful news for tired ones. You cannot add to what Christ has done, and you do not need to. Receiving a gift means admitting you could not buy it. Many nominal Christians are exhausted because they treat faith like a debt to manage instead of a gift to receive.
So put down the ledger and open the gift. God has given His Son freely, and the only fitting response is to receive Him with open hands and a thankful heart. Don't try to pay Him back. Repayment would turn His gift into a loan, and grace was never meant to be repaid. Our obedience and service flow out of gratitude for what He has already done, not as installments on a debt. Come to Jesus with nothing but your need, and you'll find that God's love was never for sale and will never be taken back.

Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Out the door at four a.m.
Elbow deep in the bargain bin
Got a list that's longer than my arm
And a balance setting off alarms
Tape it tight and curl the bow
Keep the receipt in case it's wrong
'Cause the price tag says what my heart can't show
And I've been saying it that way too long
[Chorus]
Unwrapped, unwrapped
No receipt, no return
He came wrapped in swaddling cloth
The one gift you can't earn
Unwrapped, unwrapped
Come and see what love has done
[Outro]
No receipt, no return
Unwrapped
[Verse 2]
Mama said it's the thought that counts
But I keep counting the amounts
Who spent more and who spent less
Every bow another test
Then the January bills arrive
And the paper's in the trash outside
All that love I tried to buy
Never filled me up inside
[Chorus]
Unwrapped, unwrapped
No receipt, no return
He came wrapped in swaddling cloth
The one gift you can't earn
Unwrapped, unwrapped
Come and see what love has done
[Bridge]
You can't pay it back, can't trade it in
He paid it all on a cross for sin
Empty hands are all you bring
Come receive the newborn King
[Verse 3]
Now the tree is on the curb
And the lights are in a box
I read the story in Luke chapter two
On a cold night when the noise had stopped
Quit the ledger, quit the score
There's nothing left for me to prove
I just opened up my empty hands
And He filled them with His love
[Final Chorus]
Unwrapped, unwrapped
No receipt, no return
He came wrapped in swaddling cloth
The one gift you can't earn
Unwrapped, unwrapped
Come and see what love has done
[Outro]
No receipt, no return
Unwrapped
[Outro]
No receipt, no return
Unwrapped
