Praying at All Times

praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,

Ephesians 6:18 (ESV)

Everyday translation: The Oxygen Supply

What it is in Christ

Prayer is not a seventh piece of armor. Paul doesn't give it a name like the belt or the shield. Instead, it runs through all of it. In Paul's sentence, "praying at all times" hangs on the whole command to take up the armor. Prayer is what the armor is worn in.

That is why we call it the oxygen supply. A soldier can have every piece on and still collapse without air. Prayer is staying in honest conversation with the One whose armor it is.

And you don't pray alone. "In the Spirit" means God Himself helps you pray. When you don't know what to say, the Spirit prays for you, with groanings too deep for words. Your prayers don't have to be long or polished. They have to be honest.

Paul also turns us outward: "for all the saints." No believer is meant to stand alone. Praying for others keeps you alert, and it reminds you that you are part of a bigger army.

How self-strength fakes it

Without all-prayer, we treat God like a fire alarm.

The emergency flare. I run my life on my own plans and only pray when they fall apart. Then I wonder why God feels far away.

The performance. I think prayer has to sound a certain way, so I don't pray at all unless I have time to do it "right."

The silent grind. I'm too busy, too tired, or too proud to stop and say, "I need help."

Each of these assumes you can breathe on your own most of the time. You can't. Nobody can.

How to put it on

You put on all-prayer by talking with God all through the day, honestly and briefly, because you need Him.

Morning check-in

Father, I can't do today in my own strength, so keep me talking with You all day long.

More from God's Word

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

Romans 8:26 (ESV)

Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.

Colossians 4:2 (ESV)

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Hebrews 4:16 (ESV)

Where it shows up in real life

Pray it

Father, I've treated You like an emergency flare. I'm sorry. I need You all day, not just when it falls apart. Thank You that Your Spirit prays for me when I can't. Keep me talking with You, and help me pray for the people beside me. Amen.
