Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
Ephesians 6:14 (ESV)
Everyday translation: Core Reality
A belt holds everything else in place. Paul names it first for a reason. If you are confused about what is real, nothing else stays on.
The truth that holds you together is not a self-talk script or "my truth." It is God's truth: who He is, who you are in Christ, and what is really going on in your situation. Jesus called Himself the truth, and He prayed that His people would be set apart by God's word, because God's word is truth. Fastening on the belt means letting what God says set the terms for what is real, before your feelings, your guesses, or other people's moods get a vote.
This is a gift, not a test. You do not have to figure out reality by yourself. God has spoken, and He does not change His mind about you when your feelings do.
Without the belt of truth, we steer by whatever is loudest.
Feelings. If I feel like a failure, I must be one. If I feel far from God, He must be far from me. Feelings are real and worth telling God about, but they make poor maps.
Assumptions. I fill in the blanks with the worst story. She didn't text back, so she's angry. The boss wants to meet, so I'm in trouble.
People-pleasing. I let other people's reactions decide what is true. If they are happy with me, I'm okay. If not, I'm not. So I shade the truth, say yes when I mean no, and keep everyone calm.
All three are exhausting, because reality keeps moving. You end up re-deciding who you are every hour.
You put on the belt by remembering what God has said, and by being honest with Him about what is true.
Lord, before my feelings get the first vote today, remind me what You say is true about You, about me, and about what is ahead.
So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
John 8:31-32 (ESV)
Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being,
Psalm 51:6 (ESV)
and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.
Lord, my feelings are loud and my guesses are worse. I've been letting them tell me who I am. You are the truth, and Your word is true. Hold me together with what You have said, and make me honest with You and with others. Amen.
