In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one;
Ephesians 6:16 (ESV)
Everyday translation: Active Trust
Faith is not a feeling you pump up, and it is not positive thinking. Faith is trusting God Himself. A shield is only as strong as the One you are trusting, and God does not crack.
Paul says the shield puts out "the flaming darts of the evil one." Some thoughts really do fly in like that: sudden dread, a whisper of accusation, a doubt that shows up out of nowhere and sets your imagination on fire. And some fears rise from inside us, from our own desires and our own need to be in control (James 1:14). Either way, the shield is the same. Faith puts God between you and the dart.
Faith isn't pretending everything will turn out fine. Sometimes the news is bad. Faith says, "Even if it is, God is still who He says He is, and He will not abandon me."
And faith is His gift too. Your trust is weak some days. His faithfulness is not. Even shaky hands can hold up a strong shield.
Without the shield, we try to out-think the darts.
Overthinking. If I run every scenario, I'll be ready. So the mind loops, rehearsing outcomes that may never happen.
Catastrophizing. One unanswered text becomes a car wreck. One symptom becomes a diagnosis. Five worst-case movies play before breakfast.
Arguing with every what if. I try to win the debate in my head, point by point. But a new what if is always waiting.
Googling for certainty. One more search, one more opinion, one more reassurance. It calms you for ten minutes.
All of it is an attempt to be your own shield. Your mind was never meant to carry that.
You put on the shield by remembering who God is, and by telling Him the truth about your fear.
God, when the what ifs start flying today, I am holding up who You are: faithful, near, and already in tomorrow.
Every word of God proves true;
Proverbs 30:5 (ESV)
he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
When I am afraid,
Psalm 56:3 (ESV)
I put my trust in you.
Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!”
Mark 9:24 (ESV)
Father, my mind is running ahead to the worst. I can't think my way to safety. I'm holding up who You are instead. You are faithful, You are here, and You will not let me go. I believe. Help my unbelief. Amen.
