and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.
Ephesians 6:15 (ESV)
Everyday translation: Grounded Footing
Notice what Paul actually says the shoes are: "the readiness given by the gospel of peace." The gospel gives it. You don't work it up.
The gospel of peace is the news that through Jesus you have peace with God. The war between you and Him is over. He made that peace through the cross, and He Himself is our peace, breaking down the walls between people too (Ephesians 2:14). That peace does two things for your feet.
It gives you footing. Your deepest problem, your standing with your Creator and your eternity, is already settled. So when life shoves you, you are not standing on your own balance.
It gives you readiness. Secure people can move. Because God made peace with you when you didn't deserve it, you are free to move toward hard people and hard places, carrying His peace instead of bracing for impact.
A Roman soldier's boots had studded soles that helped him keep his footing when he was pushed. That's the picture. The ground under you is Christ's finished work.
Without gospel footing, we try to make ourselves feel safe.
Walking on eggshells. If I keep everyone calm, nothing bad will happen. So I tiptoe, read every mood, and never say the hard thing.
Control. If I manage every variable, I'll be okay. So I over-plan, over-check, and get anxious or angry when people don't cooperate.
Winning. If I win this argument, I'll feel secure. So I keep score, rehearse comebacks, and need the last word.
Peace faking. I smile, say "It's fine," and quietly pull away. It looks like peace, but it is self-protection.
All of these are trying to build footing out of outcomes. Outcomes always move.
You put on the shoes by remembering where you already stand with God, and by asking Him to make you ready.
Jesus, You have already made my peace with God, so steady my feet and make me ready to carry Your peace into every room today.
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Romans 5:1 (ESV)
You keep him in perfect peace
Isaiah 26:3 (ESV)
whose mind is stayed on you,
because he trusts in you.
If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.
Romans 12:18 (ESV)
Jesus, I keep trying to make myself safe by controlling people and outcomes. You already made peace between me and God, at the cross, when I was the hard one to love. Plant my feet on that. Make me ready to move toward people with Your peace, not my fear. Amen.
