A breath prayer is a short Scripture or gospel phrase you pray with your breath when you are anxious, afraid, or overwhelmed. You inhale one half, and you exhale the other. Nothing is typed, and nothing is saved. It is not a calm trick. It is a small way to keep talking to God when your mind is loud and your words feel thin.
Jesus is not waiting for you to get quiet first. He already cares. These prayers borrow His Word so your next breath can lean on Him.
How to: Sit somewhere you can stay for a minute. Breathe slowly. On the inhale, say the first line in your heart or under your breath. On the exhale, say the second. Repeat for a minute or two, or as long as you need. If your mind wanders, come back to the lines without scolding yourself. God is not measuring your technique. He is hearing you.
For the morning and At night are here as gentle starting places. Any card can be prayed any time of day.

Card 1 of 10
When afraid
InhaleWhen I am afraid
ExhaleI put my trust in you
Psalm 56:3
Card 1: When afraid
When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.
Psalm 56:3 (ESV)
Guidance
Fear does not have to finish the sentence. Tell Him you are afraid, then put the weight on Him again. Trust is not pretending you feel brave. It is handing the fear to the One who stays.
Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you."
Hebrews 13:5 (ESV)
Guidance
Loneliness is real, and God does not shame you for naming it. Pray this promise back to Him. He often keeps it through His people too, so let a trusted brother or sister in when you can.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:9 (ESV)
Guidance
Confession is not groveling until you feel clean. It is agreeing with God about the truth, and receiving what Jesus already paid for. His faithfulness, not your apology skills, is what holds the forgiveness.
InhaleCome to me, all who labor and are heavy laden
Exhaleand I will give you rest
Matthew 11:28
Card 4: When weary
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28 (ESV)
Guidance
Weariness is not a personal failure. Jesus invites the heavy laden to Himself, not to one more strategy. Come as you are. The rest He gives is His gift, not a prize for finishing your list.
Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger,
Ephesians 4:26 (ESV)
Guidance
Anger can tell the truth that something is wrong. Bring it to God before it hardens into bitterness or harm. This is not stuffing it down. It is refusing to let anger become your master while you ask Him to act and to search your heart.
casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
1 Peter 5:7 (ESV)
Guidance
Anxiety often tries to carry everything at once. Cast it, as many times as it comes back. The reason is not that you got better at calming down. The reason is that He cares for you.
from the end of the earth I call to you when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I,
Psalm 61:2 (ESV)
Guidance
When you cannot climb, ask to be led. He is the rock higher than you, not a pep talk. Call from wherever you are, even if it feels like the end of the earth.
"Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!"
Psalm 46:10 (ESV)
Guidance
Stillness here is not emptying your mind. It is stopping the frantic scramble long enough to remember who God is. He will be exalted. Your peace rests on that, not on getting every outcome settled first.
The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
Lamentations 3:22-23 (ESV)
Guidance
These words were written over ruin, not over an easy sunrise. Start the day by receiving mercy you did not earn. His faithfulness is already ahead of you.
Exhalefor you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety
Psalm 4:8
Card 10: At night
In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.
Psalm 4:8 (ESV)
Guidance
Night can magnify every worry. Ask Him for the peace to lie down, and remember who keeps you. Safety is His work. You can close your eyes because He does not.
Breath prayers will not erase every storm. They keep you turned toward the One who already stepped into the storm for you. Jesus is our peace. He cared enough to die for sinners and rise again, so your next breath can rest on what He finished, not on how steady you feel.
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
John 14:27 (ESV)
For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility
Ephesians 2:14 (ESV)
but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
If you don't know Him yet: you can start right here. Turn to Jesus, who died for sinners and rose again, trust Him, and bring Him your next breath. Read more on the Good News page.
