Confession and Assurance

This page is for confessing sin to God, receiving His forgiveness in Christ, and walking clean. It is not a quiz, and it does not score you. It is Scripture-first prayer for believers who need to come clean and rest on what Jesus already finished.

How this fits Soul Care: Search Me, O God is the broader private heart check (Psalm 139; Everyday Idols by name; a short 1 John 1:9 turn). This page leans into confession, assurance, and clean walking. Use Search Me when you want God to search the whole heart. Use this page when sin is already on the table and you need to agree with God, receive mercy, and turn.

How to: Sit somewhere you can stay for a few minutes. Read the opening. Walk the steps at your own pace. You do not have to finish all of them. Front of each card holds the step title, key verse, and Pray it. Flip for Living it, more from God's Word, and songs. Come back as often as you need. God is not grading your apology. In Christ He draws near.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

1 John 1:9 (ESV)

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!

Psalm 51:1-2 (ESV)

Confession is agreeing with God about sin. Assurance rests on Christ's finished work and on God's faithfulness and justice, not on how forgiven you feel. Come into the light, name what is true, ask for mercy because of Jesus, receive what He already bought, and walk clean with Him.

Each step shows Scripture and a Pray it prompt on the front. Tap a step, or press Enter or Space on Turn the card, for Living it, more from God's Word, and songs. Tap empty space on the back to flip back.

Step 1 of 6

Come into the light

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.

1 John 1:5-7 (ESV)

Pray it

Tell Him you are done hiding. Ask Him to bring what belongs in the light into the light. You do not have to invent a list. Ask Him to show the next true thing.

Step 1: Come into the light

Living it

Hiding feels safer until it is not. God is light, and the blood of Jesus cleanses people who walk toward Him, not people who polish a mask. Coming into the light is turning toward the Father who already sees, and who cleanses by the Son. If shame says you are beyond hope, hold Who God Says I Am. If a hard season is louder than the sin, hold Promises for Hard Seasons. This step is about direction: toward Him, not away.

More from God's Word

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

1 John 1:8 (ESV)

For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.

John 3:20-21 (ESV)

Step 2 of 6

Name the sin honestly

Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.

Proverbs 28:13 (ESV)

Pray it

Name one sin plainly, without dressing it up and without a stage performance. Tell Him what you wanted, what you chose, and who it hurt, including Him. Heart-level honesty beats a long laundry list.

Step 2: Name the sin honestly

Living it

Concealing drains you. David said silence wasted his bones. Naming sin is not theater, and it is not digging until you feel crushed. It is telling the truth about a real turn away from God. Guilt that leads to the cross is a gift. Condemnation that says you are finished is a lie Christ already answered. If an idol root sits under the behavior, name it and walk Everyday Idols when ready. If you need a fuller examen first, go to Search Me, O God. Here, stay with what God is putting His finger on now.

More from God's Word

For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. Selah I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah

Psalm 32:3-5 (ESV)

For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.

Psalm 51:3-4 (ESV)

Songs

Step 3 of 6

Confess to God

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

1 John 1:9 (ESV)

Pray it

Say it to Him: "Father, I have sinned. This is what I did / wanted / hid. Forgive me because of Jesus. Cleanse me." Then stop arguing your case. Rest on His faithfulness and justice, not on how polished the prayer sounded.

Step 3: Confess to God

Living it

Confession is agreeing with God, then asking for what Jesus already paid for. It is not groveling until you feel clean, and it is not earning a reset by how sorry you sound. He is faithful and just to forgive. Faithful to His promise. Just because the cross already dealt with the guilt. You do not forgive yourself into peace. You receive what the Advocate already secured. If feelings lag behind the truth, that is common. Keep talking to Him. If your words feel thin, borrow Psalm 51.

More from God's Word

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!

Psalm 51:1-2 (ESV)

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

Psalm 51:17 (ESV)

My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

1 John 2:1-2 (ESV)

Songs

Step 4 of 6

Receive assurance

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Romans 8:1 (ESV)

Pray it

Thank Him out loud that there is no condemnation left for you in Christ. Tell Him you receive His forgiveness. Do not try to pay Him back for it. If your heart still feels stained, hold His Word above your pulse for a minute.

Step 4: Receive assurance

Living it

Assurance is God's act before it is your mood. He removes transgressions as far as east from west. Scarlet becomes white because He says so, not because you talked yourself into feeling new. Worldly grief loops on shame. Godly grief runs to the cross and stays there. If an identity lie is still loud after you confess, go to Who God Says I Am. If you need a short breath on 1 John 1:9, use the guilty card on Breath Prayers. Do not wait to feel forgiven before you thank Him. Receive, then thank.

More from God's Word

He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.

Psalm 103:10-12 (ESV)

“Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.”

Isaiah 1:18 (ESV)

Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not retain his anger forever, because he delights in steadfast love. He will again have compassion on us; he will tread our iniquities underfoot. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.

Micah 7:18-19 (ESV)

Songs

Step 5 of 6

Walk clean

So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Romans 6:11 (ESV)

Pray it

Ask Him for one concrete turn: a boundary, a confession to someone you wronged when wise, a habit to lay down, a yes to obedience you have been delaying. Tell Him you will walk as someone alive to God in Christ, not as someone still negotiating with the old life.

Step 5: Walk clean

Living it

Grace is not a free pass to stay in the dark. Walking clean is repentance with feet: turning back so sins may be blotted out, and living from the new identity Jesus bought. It is not sinless perfection this side of glory, and it is not behaviorism without a changed heart. Consider yourself dead to sin and alive to God. When Jesus told a forgiven sinner to go and sin no more, the no-condemnation and the new walk belonged together. If temptation is next, hold the Tempted card on Promises for Hard Seasons and idol roots on Everyday Idols. If grief or "how long" rose under the confession, lament is welcome on How Long, O LORD?.

More from God's Word

Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out,

Acts 3:19 (ESV) (ESV continues into v. 20; trailing comma kept as published)

What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?

Romans 6:1-2 (ESV)

And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”

John 8:11 (ESV) (Jesus' words; the longer John 7:53-8:11 passage has a well-known textual history)

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

Psalm 51:10 (ESV)

He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.

1 Peter 2:24 (ESV)

Songs

Optional · Step 6 of 6

Confess to a trusted believer

Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.

James 5:16 (ESV)

Pray it

Ask Him whether this sin needs another set of Christian ears, not instead of confessing to God, but after you have. If yes, ask Him who is wise, safe, and mature. Then take the next small step when He makes it clear.

Optional · Step 6: Confess to a trusted believer

Living it

This step is optional and careful. James invites mutual confession and prayer in the body, not a trauma dump, not gossip, and not forcing intimacy with someone untrustworthy. Some sins stay with God alone. Some have harmed people and need wise repair. Some stay stuck until a trusted brother or sister helps you walk in the light. Choose someone who fears God, keeps confidence, and points you to Christ. You are not required to tell everyone everything. If danger, abuse, or crisis is involved, get safe help now (988 / 911 / pastor or counselor). Do not treat this card as the whole plan.

More from God's Word

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.

1 John 1:7 (ESV)

Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

Galatians 6:1-2 (ESV)

Where to go next

A closing word

Confession does not create God's love. It brings you into the open where His love in Christ already stands. Jesus died for sinners and rose again. He is the Advocate and the propitiation, faithful and just to forgive and to cleanse. You can come clean without pretending you feel finished. Receive Him. Walk with Him. Amen.

but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:8 (ESV)

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Romans 8:1 (ESV)

For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.

2 Corinthians 1:20 (ESV)

Songs

If you don't know Him yet: you can start right here. Turn to Jesus, who died for sinners and rose again, trust Him, and bring Him your whole heart, including the sin you would rather hide. The Good News page says it more fully.
